He could have chosen a warmer spot by the window or a quieter one upstairs, but Jasper likes to be where people gather. He knows the sound of every familiar footstep and the small rituals of the day: the first cup set on the table, the chair pulled closer to the light, the voices that drift in and out. Most visitors assume he sleeps through it all. Jasper has never felt the need to correct them.
There is a gentleness to Jasper that younger dragons sometimes mistake for laziness. He has learned that not every problem needs fixing, not every silence needs filling, and being there can matter more than knowing what to say. When someone is tired or troubled, he makes room beside him with a slow shift of his tail. When laughter returns, his golden scales catch the light as though he has been saving a little of it.
