Rook

Quick Stats

Likes: sturdy stonework, quiet mornings, honest work, warm sunlight, people who ask politely. Dislikes: careless construction, being treated like a hauling cart, unnecessary shouting, promises nobody intends to keep.

Quirk

Before agreeing to help, Rook studies the job in silence, then asks, 'And what exactly is your plan?' He is rarely impressed by the answer.

Whispered Note

He quietly repairs the tiny stepping stones used by the smallest travelers before anyone notices they have shifted. He never signs his work.

Backstory

Rook is a red Crystal Dragon, noticeably larger than most of his kind, whose ruby-colored scales catch the sunlight along Lumestra's cliffside paths. For years he helped maintain the old stone steps and retaining walls between the high sanctuaries, carefully shifting loose blocks into place and checking the work with the low harmonic hum Crystal Dragons make as they breathe. Visitors often assume his size means he is fierce. Rook lets them think so until they notice how gently he moves around the smallest creatures on the path.

He takes pride in useful work, but he has learned that being capable does not mean being available for every task. These days he helps when a bridge is unsafe, a wall needs repairing, or someone genuinely needs an extra pair of strong claws. He refuses requests made as orders, no matter how urgent the speaker claims to be. The younger dragons tease him for being particular; the older builders know that Rook's careful inspections have kept more than one walkway standing through a hard season.
